But for high school players looking for an upgrade to a professional level horn, the Conn 8D can be a great choice if you love the traditional big, dark American horn sound. Because of their large bell, we would not recommend an 8D to a student starting out due to the large volume of air required to sustain it (younger horn players should check out our Conn 6D and Holton H179 reviews). While many Conn loyalists are caught up with the Elkhart models, the truth is that newer 8Ds, made in Eastlake Indiana can be decent horns - but not for every style of player. But it still has its hardcore loyalists and remains one of the most popular American horns. Whether due to these manufacturing changes or general shifts in taste, the Conn 8D is starting to lose some of its stature in the American horn world - with many players moving to custom-made Geyer horns at the professional level.
But you'll be increasingly hard pressed to find an Elkhart model in good working condition. And that the newer versions, while improved over Texas-made models, don't quite compare. Horn players generally agree that the earlier "Elkhart" models-manufactured in Elkhart Indiana between 19-are of superior quality, especially compared to those made in Texas from 1970 to 1986. If you hear a big silky, soaring horn line in the next big block buster film, chances are it was played on an 8D. Especially renown for its prominent role in Hollywood soundtracks, the Conn 8D has a distinctive tone quality that counters what its evangelists consider the more stuffy Geyer style horns. While it might not be the prettiest Conn 8D you've ever seen, it's a great player and it's got a lot of life left in it. Its original case is included, also showing wear on the handle and around the storage compartment inside the case. All the soldering that was required also left behind some lacquer burn, which will likely flake off over time (around the pinky hook and on some upper tuning slides). Additional lacquer wear can be found around the tuning slides, as well as a few minor dents that do not impact playability. Scars in the lacquer were left behind, but they just add character to an already great horn! The lacquer has already worn off of this instrument by about 50%, with the most significant wear around the bell throat and the left hand guard. They also worked out some dents from the bell section as well as underneath the pinky ring. It needed a fair amount of work, but we wouldn't have done it if it wasn't absolutely worth all of the time and labor! Besides an ultrasonic cleaning, our tech needed to resolder some tuning slide braces and the pinky ring.
This horn spent some quality time with our professional brass technician in our repair shop. There are lots of dent scars in the bell. The lacquer finish is in rough condition.
The rotor valves and tuning slides all work well with smooth action. Sterilized, replaced the stop plate corks, installed new string on rotors and removed some bell dings.
