Because of their large bell, we would not recommend an 8D to a student starting out due to the large volume of air required to sustain it (younger horn players should check out our Conn 6D and Holton H179 reviews). While many Conn loyalists are caught up with the Elkhart models, the truth is that newer 8Ds, made in Eastlake Indiana can be decent horns - but not for every style of player. But it still has its hardcore loyalists and remains one of the most popular American horns. Its original case is included, also showing wear on the handle and around the storage compartment inside the case. All the soldering that was required also left behind some lacquer burn, which will likely flake off over time (around the pinky hook and on some upper tuning slides). Additional lacquer wear can be found around the tuning slides, as well as a few minor dents that do not impact playability. Scars in the lacquer were left behind, but they just add character to an already great horn! The lacquer has already worn off of this instrument by about 50%, with the most significant wear around the bell throat and the left hand guard. They also worked out some dents from the bell section as well as underneath the pinky ring. It needed a fair amount of work, but we wouldn't have done it if it wasn't absolutely worth all of the time and labor! Besides an ultrasonic cleaning, our tech needed to resolder some tuning slide braces and the pinky ring.
